Question about my tooth?

I went to the dentist last week for a routine check up. I knew at that time that I had an issue with one of my teeth and discovered that I had cracked a wisdom tooth and I have cavity in this tooth. Because of the crack it is easy to get things stuck in the tooth (gum, etc.). My dentist told me to call an oral surgeon and I have a consultation next week for an extraction but today it is really aching. Is it possible that the root is now exposed and or the cavity is worse in a week? I hate to act like a wuss but I would also hate to spend all weekend with a toothache. I also had an xray last week and the tooth root looked fine.
