Place Cells in the Mouse Hippocampus normal vs. mutant

You need to give more information for an adequate answer to this question. However, hippocampal place cells function to make mental maps of the environment. They would enable a mouse to remember a path through a maze, or the location of a hidden platform in a water maze (enabling the mouse to escape). Obviously, a mutant mouse without functional place cells would not be able to learn how to navigate around his environment
